{"id":902,"date":"2012-11-04T11:37:05","date_gmt":"2012-11-04T09:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saisa.eu\/blogs\/Guidance\/?p=902"},"modified":"2012-11-04T11:37:05","modified_gmt":"2012-11-04T09:37:05","slug":"hurricane-sandy-views-from-goes-13-and-suomi-npp-satellites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saisa.eu\/blogs\/Guidance\/?p=902","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Sandy, views from GOES-13 and Suomi NPP satellites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There has been several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/hurricanes\/archives\/2012\/h2012_Sandy.html\">videos<\/a> by NASA showing Hurricane Sandy from the wheather satellite.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"sandy\" src=\"http:\/\/saisa.eu\/blogs\/Guidance\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/sandy.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"140\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The video animation is taken from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GOES_13\">GEOS-13<\/a> satellite. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/goespoes.gsfc.nasa.gov\/project\/index.html\">GEOS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES)\/ Polar Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) program is a key element in National Weather Service (NWS) operations. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/goes.gsfc.nasa.gov\/text\/goesfaq.html\">Geostationary<\/a>&#8221; means &#8220;it doesn&#8217;t move with respect to the earth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The GOES\/POES mission is composed of two geostationary satellites and two polar orbiting satellites. These satellites operate in pairs.<\/p>\n<p>The geostationary satellites, GOES-East covering the East Coast and GOES-West covering the West Coast, provide real-time weather data for use in short-term weather forecasting (warnings of severe weather) and space environment monitoring, as well as research and development.<\/p>\n<p>The polar orbiting satellites primarily provide long-range weather forecasting, ensuring that non-visible data, for any region of the Earth, are no more than six hours old.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The polar satellite that was used for monitoring Hurricane Sandy was Suomi NPP.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/NPP\/main\/index.html\">Suomi NPP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership collects and distributes remotely-sensed land, ocean, and atmospheric data to the meteorological and global climate change communities<\/p>\n<p>It will provide atmospheric and sea surface temperatures, humidity sounding, land and ocean biological productivity, and cloud and aerosol properties.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"NPP2\" src=\"http:\/\/saisa.eu\/blogs\/Guidance\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/npp2-1.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"275\" \/><\/p>\n<p>NASA renamed NPP in honor of the late <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verner_E._Suomi\">Verner E.
